How Wounds Heal

Helping Heal Wounds…Helping Transform Lives

1How do wounds heal?
When you experience a wound on part of your body, it goes through specific and complex stages. This is known as the “cascade of healing”. It is divided into 4 phases: Hemostasis (stopping the bleeding), Inflammatory (swelling), Proliferative (regrowth of tissue), and Maturation (scar formation). View Our How Wounds Heal Video.

2What prevents some wounds from healing?
Certain factors can slow or even prevent a wound from healing. One of the biggest factors is not enough blood supply to the wound. Oxygen and nutrients that new blood carries to a wound are essential to healing. ATTENTION: If the wound is infected, it is advised that you consult with your physician or health care professional.

3Are there treatments for chronic wounds?
Yes, there are treatment options for chronic wounds, such as prescription wound care dressings, that help improve and speed up the healing process.

4How does Keragel®, KeragelT®, and Keramatrix® help heal wounds?
Keragel®, KeragelT®, and Keramatrix® are advanced wound healing gels and matrices available by prescription that are clinically proven to help heal wounds. The active ingredient in all three products is a form of keratin.

5What is keratin?
Keratin is a natural substance produced by humans and animals that help regulate important cellular activities in the skin. It is also critical for regulating wound healing. Keratin sends signals to cells responsible for rebuilding tissue (called keratinocyte cells) to grow and move to close wounds quickly.

6Where does the keratin in Molecular Biologicals’ products come from?
We source our keratin from New Zealand wool sustainably and safely without harming the sheep in any way.

7What is Replicine™ Bioactive Keratin?
Replicine™ Bioactive Keratin is a unique manufacturing technology developed by Molecular Biologicals.  A bioactive molecule is isolated and extracted from sheep’s wool in its complete form. This “bioactivity” is an important factor for healing wounds.

8Are there any side effects?
No side effects have been reported with Replicine™ Bioactive Keratin. These products should not be used in patients with known sensitivity to keratin or any of the excipients.

How our Wound Healing Products Work

1. Replicine™ Bioactive Keratin—the active ingredient in our wound-healing products—sends signals to keratinocyte cells (responsible for rebuilding tissue and needed for healing) to grow and move quickly to close the wound.

2. With more keratinocyte cells, the repair process (known as epithelialization) goes more quickly.

3.  Replicine™ Bioactive Keratin encourages other tissues, such as collagen, to grow. Collagen is a type of scaffolding that makes the skin stronger.

4. Replicine™ Bioactive Keratin also provides moisture to the wound that helps tissues heal.
